United States · State automatic renewal laws

Renewal consent and notices for WooCommerce Subscriptions.

Many US states regulate subscriptions that renew automatically: clear terms before purchase, the customer's affirmative consent, an acknowledgement, reminders before certain renewals and an easy way to cancel. The rules and their dates differ from state to state.

What the laws say

California's automatic renewal law (Business and Professions Code § 17602, amended by AB 2863 from 1 July 2025) asks, among other things, for clear and conspicuous terms, the consumer's affirmative consent and an acknowledgement. New York (General Business Law § 527-a), Illinois, Minnesota, Colorado, Virginia, Connecticut and Oregon have rules of their own.

Newer laws add notice windows. Maryland (Commercial Law § 14-1329, in force since 1 June 2026) asks for a notice 15 to 45 days before an initial term of a year or more renews, and 3 to 21 days before a free trial longer than 14 days converts. Louisiana (R.S. 51:3301–3305, from 1 January 2027) asks for a notice at least 3 days before certain renewals and exempts small businesses.

Outside the US, Spain's Ley 10/2025 asks for a notice fifteen days before the deadline to object to the renewal of fixed-term contracts.

Which laws apply to you, and the exceptions in each, are questions for your counsel.

US Auto Renewal Notices Pro is sold here as an add-on to our free US Auto Renewal Notices plugin for WooCommerce Subscriptions. It is not on sale yet: use Notify me and we will email you when it is.

What US Auto Renewal Notices does

  • Free: records a separate, unchecked consent at checkout with the exact terms shown, the UTC time and a hashed IP, and sends an acknowledgement and an annual reminder.
  • Pro: state timing presets including Maryland and Louisiana, an optional Spain preset, price-change notices, CSV and PDF consent exports and a checklist for your cancellation path.

What it doesn't do

  • Decide which state laws apply to you, or your notice timing and channels: your counsel approves your terms.
  • Change billing or obtain new consent for a price change.
  • Work with WooCommerce Checkout Blocks: classic checkout only.
  • Prove delivery: an email accepted by your server is not proof that it arrived.
