The German cancellation button, on the shop system you use.
If consumers can sign up online for a contract that runs over time, such as a subscription, a membership or a recurring box, § 312k BGB requires a button that lets them cancel it online just as easily. Here is what the law asks for, and every platform version of our Kündigungsbutton.
§ 312k of the German Civil Code (BGB) has applied since 1 July 2022. It covers websites on which consumers can conclude a paid continuing contract (Dauerschuldverhältnis). Contracts that by law may only be cancelled in a stricter form than text form, and financial services, are excluded.
The cancellation button must be labelled “Verträge hier kündigen” (or an equally unambiguous wording) and lead directly to a confirmation page. That page asks for the type of cancellation (with the reason for an extraordinary one), details that identify the customer and the contract, the date on which the contract should end, and where to send the confirmation. A second button labelled “jetzt kündigen” submits the cancellation. Both buttons and the page must be permanently available and directly and easily accessible.
The customer must be able to save the declaration with the date and time it was made. The business must immediately confirm its content, the date and time of receipt and the requested end date electronically in text form, for example by email. If the buttons are missing, consumers can cancel such contracts at any time without notice.
Judgment calls we flag rather than make for you: the Federal Court of Justice (BGH) ruled on the confirmation page on 16 July 2026 (I ZR 200/25), and it hears two cases on 5 November 2026 on whether a login may be required before cancelling (I ZR 272/25, I ZR 275/25). Our editions never require a login.
Die Kündigungsschaltfläche muss gut lesbar mit nichts anderem als den Wörtern „Verträge hier kündigen“ oder mit einer entsprechenden eindeutigen Formulierung beschriftet sein.
The official text: § 312k Abs. 2 Satz 2 BGB Our translation: “The cancellation button must be clearly legible and labelled with nothing other than the words ‘Verträge hier kündigen’ or a corresponding unambiguous wording.”
