Louisiana renewal notices from 1 January 2027: what subscription shops must send

US auto-renewal laws keep adding notice windows. Maryland's have applied since 1 June 2026, and Louisiana's apply from 1 January 2027. If you sell subscriptions to US consumers, your renewal emails now have deadlines.

Maryland, since 1 June 2026

Maryland Commercial Law § 14-1329 asks for a notice 15 to 45 days before an initial term of a year or more renews, and 3 to 21 days before a free trial longer than 14 days converts to a paid subscription.

Louisiana, from 1 January 2027

Louisiana's Act 830 of 2026 (R.S. 51:3301–3305) asks for a notice at least 3 days before certain renewals. It exempts small businesses.

California and the other states

California's automatic renewal law (Business and Professions Code § 17602, amended by AB 2863 from 1 July 2025) asks, among other things, for clear and conspicuous terms, the consumer's affirmative consent and an acknowledgement. New York (General Business Law § 527-a), Illinois, Minnesota, Colorado, Virginia, Connecticut and Oregon have rules of their own. Outside the US, Spain's Ley 10/2025 asks for a notice fifteen days before the deadline to object to the renewal of fixed-term contracts.

What to check now

  • Do you record a separate, unchecked consent at checkout, with the exact terms shown and when it was given?
  • Does every subscriber get an acknowledgement, and the renewal notices on the dates their state requires?
  • Do free trials longer than 14 days trigger a notice before they convert?

Which laws apply to you, and the exceptions in each, are questions for your counsel.
